Start with the whole arrival day

The best route to Uvita depends on when you land, how you like to travel, and what you are bringing. Start with your international flight, then look at the entire journey to your room. Immigration, collecting bags, meeting a driver, or checking in for a second flight all take time. A cheap arrival late in the afternoon can create a more demanding onward trip. Before booking separate tickets, put the times beside each other and ask whether the day still feels comfortable if the first flight runs late.

Come down the coast by road

From the San José area, the usual coastal route takes Ruta 27 west and then Route 34 south, passing the Quepos area and Dominical on the way to Uvita. For planning, allow around four hours or more from the airport area, with additional time for stops, traffic, weather, and your exact starting point. That is a broad estimate, not a transfer guarantee. An early departure gives you more flexibility for lunch and breaks. If your flight lands late, an airport-area overnight can make the following morning considerably easier.

Choose who does the driving

A private transfer is a good fit when you want to arrive together and leave the navigation to someone else. Confirm the full price, pickup location, luggage capacity, and any planned stops before booking. A rental car makes sense when independent day trips are a big part of your stay. Ask the rental company about the roads on your actual itinerary; the main coastal journey and a steep road to a hillside attraction are different questions. If you plan to rent locally after arrival, arrange that ahead of time rather than assuming a vehicle will be waiting.

Consider the Quepos flight

SANSA lists flights from San José to Quepos, with an approximate flying time of 30 minutes. From Quepos, you still need ground transport south to Uvita. The attraction is a shorter road journey, but compare the full travel day rather than just time in the air. A long connection can make a direct road transfer the simpler choice. For a detailed look at airport names, connections, and onward pickup, read our Quepos-to-Uvita guide before choosing this option.

Leave a real connection buffer

At the time of writing, SANSA recommends at least five hours between an arriving international flight and its onward flight, and requires arrival at least 60 minutes before a domestic departure. Check the airline’s current instructions for your booking. Review baggage conditions as well: a bag accepted on your international ticket is not automatically included on a separate domestic fare. If the times do not line up comfortably, travel the next morning or take the road. An unhurried arrival is worth more than a connection that works only on paper.

Match the plan to your Synergy booking

For hosted retreats, Synergy includes a coordinated group pickup from an agreed meeting point in San José, with Quepos arrangements for guests flying SANSA. Confirm the group plan before your guests buy individual onward tickets; separate arrival times can complicate an otherwise simple transfer. Transport is not included with individual room stays or full-property rentals. For those bookings, settle the pickup or driving plan in advance and send us your expected arrival time. Room check-in begins at 3 PM. The aim is simple: arrive with enough of the day left to put your bags down, explore the gardens, and feel that you have made it. Share the plan with everyone travelling together, including the exact meeting point.
