Choose a few things you really want to do
Uvita makes a persuasive case for getting outside. There is the coastline, of course, but also waterfalls, forest, and the chance to see this part of Costa Rica from the water. The mistake is trying to fit all of it into one day. Choose one main outing, give it the better part of the morning, and leave yourself an afternoon without a deadline. For a retreat group, that usually works better than a tightly packed excursion circuit: people have different energy levels, and the conversations on the way home deserve some room too.
Walk into Marino Ballena
Start with Marino Ballena National Park and the broad beach at Uvita. Its famous whale-tail formation is a sand-and-rock connection that becomes accessible at low tide. Ask about the tide and current access conditions before heading out; the timing changes daily. You can also enjoy a beach walk without making the tip of the formation your goal. Take water and sun protection, and check current park entry information before setting off. Let the landscape set the pace: there is plenty to look at between the trees and the water.
Make a waterfall your main event
Catarata Uvita is a nearby option for a shorter outing, while Nauyaca deserves a more substantial place in the day. These are separate destinations, with different access arrangements. At Nauyaca, decide which operator and entrance you are using before booking transport; a map pin for the falls is not enough. Ask what walking is involved and what conditions are like that morning. You can appreciate a waterfall from its banks without getting in. Rain can change the water quickly, so follow the guidance of staff at the actual entrance.
See the coastline from the water
A boat outing puts a different scale on the coast. Whale watching is seasonal, and a sighting is never something to promise your group. Choose an operator who explains the conditions, wildlife approach, duration, and boarding arrangements clearly. Ask about the most suitable departure for your dates rather than building your plans around a photograph taken in another season. If some guests prefer land, make that an equally good option. A beach morning or time back at Synergy should feel like a choice, not like missing the real experience.
Head north for a different beach day
Dominical makes an easy change of scene, with a surf-oriented beach atmosphere and places to stop for food. Treat it as a relaxed outing rather than another attraction to tick off. If you want to surf, book a lesson and let the instructor choose suitable conditions for your ability. Watching the waves from shore is an excellent plan in its own right. For a group, agree on one meeting point and a return time, then give people a little freedom to find their own lunch or browse.
A simple three-day approach
On your first full day, keep it local: a tide-timed beach walk, lunch, and an afternoon by the pool. Use the next morning for the outing that matters most to you, whether that is Nauyaca or a boat trip. On the third day, take a leisurely drive toward Dominical or Ojochal, or leave the day open. This is a suggested rhythm, not a tour package. At Synergy, we can help retreat hosts arrange experiences around their program; excursions are priced separately. Tell us what your people enjoy, and we can help you narrow the possibilities to a day they will actually love. Keep one morning free until you know what the weather is doing.
